Auxiliary Police Order
Erlaß des Kommissars des Reichs für das Preußische Ministerium des Innern über Einberufung und Verwendung der Hilfspolizei
Order of the Commissioner of the Reich for the Prussian Ministry of the Interior on the Call-up and Use of Auxiliary Police
Göring’s order allowed the Prussian police to call up volunteers as auxiliary policemen, on the grounds that left-wing and above all Communist violence had overstretched the regular force. It was never published in full: the official press service released its opening and its list of tasks (protecting meetings, marches and party premises, supporting cordons and patrols, and in an emergency guarding vital plants and public buildings) and summarised the rest. Only ‘honourable’, voting-age Germans ‘standing on national ground’ could serve; they wore their own clothes, which might be an organisation’s uniform, with a white ‘Hilfspolizei’ armband, and had full police powers while on duty. In practice the order armed the SA, SS and Stahlhelm with state authority.

About this text
The text is abridged: the omitted parts are marked where they fall and can be read on the gazette pages. The order was not published (MBliV. 1933 I S. 543, scan by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on the Internet Archive, lists it as ‘nicht veröffentl.’), and no scan of it exists. The text rests on the release of the Amtlicher Preußischer Pressedienst of 24 February 1933, transcribed from the page image of the Münsterischer Anzeiger of 25 February 1933, which sets the order’s own words in quotation marks and the press service’s summary outside them; compared with the Kölnische Zeitung of the same day, which prints ‘zurzeit’, ‘im Notfall’, ‘andern’ (twice), ‘Unterstützungen der Landjägereistreifen’ and ‘Übernahme’ and has no comma after ‘Seite’. Neither prints a signature: the signature block gives the issuing authority as the release names it. No scan of the original publication was available to check the transcription against.
The English translation was made for this site and is not an official translation. The quotation marks are the newspaper’s and mark the order’s own words; the final paragraph is the press service’s summary. ‘Auf nationalem Boden stehend’ (‘standing on national ground’) is translated literally; it meant supporters of the governing nationalist camp. ‘Landjägerei’ is the Prussian rural gendarmerie.
